In 1962, Ridge Vineyards made its first Monte Bello and has maintained a record of consistent brilliance unrivalled in California ever since. Winning a world wide recognition as an American first growth, its dependable longevity and classical balance earning it the esteem of domestic and international collectors alike.
Since that time, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare and exceptional vineyards where climate, soil, and variety are ideally matched.
Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Chardonnay 1996
"The most aromatically exotic vintage of the decade, the 1996 Monte Bello is superb, bursting from the glass with an extravagant bouquet of cassis, cigar box, rich soil, roasted meats and decadent oriental spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, richly tannic and very intense, with a deep and tight-knit core and a bright line of acidity, concluding with a long, youthful finish. The 1996 vintage saw rain during flowering—which reduced yields at this address to less than one ton per acre—followed by a warm summer. The result is a super concentrated Monte Bello that hasn't even reached its plateau of maturity yet." - 96 points, The Wine Advocate.
"Rich and ageing beautifully, with exotic Asian spice and smoky, meaty aromas following through to sleek blackberry, tea and leathery sage flavours, which take on complexity and tannins on the finish." - 91 points, Wine Spectator.
Lytton Springs 2001
"Firm, focused and concentrated, with a classy array of black plum, black cherry, cola, coffee, chocolate, blackberry, vanilla, spice and herb flavours. The wine is silky smooth, ripe and luxuriously long on the finish." - 91 points, Wine Enthusiast.
